How to Spot Fake Manga — Our Authenticity Guarantee

3 min read · 419 words

Counterfeit manga is a real and widespread problem in India. Volumes sold through resale groups, marketplace third-party sellers and some import shops are frequently unlicensed reprints — scanned from a real book, reprinted cheaply, and sold at or near the price of the genuine article. Most buyers never find out, because the difference is not obvious until you hold a real copy next to a fake one.

Everything we sell is an officially licensed English edition sourced through legitimate distribution. This page explains how to verify that yourself — on our books or anyone else's.

How can I tell if a manga volume is fake?

Six checks, roughly in order of reliability:

  1. Paper weight and colour. Licensed Viz and Dark Horse volumes use a slightly cream, opaque stock. Counterfeits are usually brighter white, thinner, and you can see the next page through it.
  2. Colour registration on the cover. Look closely at where two colours meet. On a fake, reprinted from a scan, the edges are fractionally misaligned or fuzzy. On a real printing they are sharp.
  3. The spine. Genuine volumes are properly glue-bound and the spine text is centred and level. Fakes often have text creeping toward one edge, and the block cracks early.
  4. Interior blacks. Manga is mostly black ink. On a real printing, large black areas are solid and even. A scan-and-reprint shows banding, grey patches, or a faint dot pattern under a phone macro lens.
  5. The ISBN barcode. Every licensed volume has one, printed crisply, and it should match the volume when searched. A blurred, misprinted or missing barcode is close to conclusive.
  6. The colophon. The publisher information page carries the licensor, translator, letterer and printing line. Counterfeits often reproduce it at the wrong size or drop it entirely.

Why does it matter?

Beyond getting a worse object for the same money: unlicensed reprints return nothing to the mangaka or the publisher. A series continues because its volumes sell. Buying licensed copies is the only version of collecting that funds more of what you are collecting.
